Part 1: We gather

5Glory to God

What you’ll see: on Sundays, but not in Advent or Lent.

One of the oldest hymns of the Church. It opens with the song the angels sang over Bethlehem, then praises the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. It’s left out in Advent and Lent.

Do Stand and sing.

Say “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will…”

Learn it in Latin: Gloria

For parentsThe theology behind this moment, and where every fact comes from

Where this comes from

  • Teaching A very ancient hymn praising God the Father and the Lamb, sung on Sundays outside Advent and Lent, and on solemnities and feasts (GIRM 53).
  • The angels’ song: “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2:14).
  • Tip In Advent it’s saved for Christmas, so the angels’ song rings out new.
