The Mass, step by step 20 of 21

Part 3: We offer and receive

20Quiet thanks

Jesus has just come to you in Communion, so use these minutes well: thank him, tell him what’s on your mind, and ask for what you need. Then the priest prays, and we answer “Amen”.

Do Kneel or sit; stand for the prayer after Communion.

Say Your own words to Jesus; then “Amen.”

Where this comes from

  • Teaching There’s time for silent prayer after Communion (GIRM 88).
  • Teaching The prayer after Communion asks that the Mass bear fruit in us (GIRM 89).
  • Tradition Praying the Anima Christi (“Soul of Christ”) after Communion. The Church’s handbook of indulgences still gives it as an example of a thanksgiving after Communion (Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, grant 8).
