The Mass, step by step 17 of 21

Part 3: We offer and receive

17The sign of peace

Before receiving Jesus together, we offer peace to those nearest us. Jesus told us to make peace with others before bringing our gift to the altar.

Do Offer a sign of peace only to the people nearest you, the way your parish does it: a handshake or a bow.

Say “The peace of the Lord be with you always.” — “And with your spirit.” Then: “Peace be with you.”

Where this comes from

  • Teaching We ask for peace and unity and show our love for each other before Communion (GIRM 82).
  • Teaching Only to those nearest, “in a sober manner”; the bishops decide the gesture itself (GIRM 82).
  • “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you” (John 14:27), which the priest’s prayer quotes; “go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:24).
  • Teaching Christians already “exchange the kiss” in the year 155 (CCC 1345).
