16The Our Father
We pray the words Jesus himself taught us. “Give us this day our daily bread” means even more here, because the bread we are about to receive is Jesus.
Do Stand with your palms together, rather than holding or raising hands.
Say “Our Father…”, then “For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.”
Learn it in Latin: Pater Noster
Did you know?
Why is there no “Amen” straight after the Our Father at Mass?
The priest carries on with a prayer of his own, and we finish with “For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever” (GIRM 81).
For parentsThe theology behind this moment, and where every fact comes from
Where this comes from
- Teaching “Our daily bread” means, for Christians, above all the Eucharistic bread (GIRM 81).
- Teaching The people don’t hold hands or raise them during the Our Father (Archdiocese of Singapore).
- Teaching The priest’s extra prayer asks God to free us from evil, and we finish it with “For the kingdom…” (GIRM 81).
- The prayer Jesus taught: Matthew 6:9–13.
